Word explosion
April 7, 2008 by wskrz
The past few weeks have been linguistically crazy for Alex. It’s as if his brain suddenly decided to play some catch up.
It started with this list of words, that came within one week:

Just in case you can’t read my writing, that’s “uh-oh, home, bear, big, story, door, ah-ha and bulb.”
Then, this past week, this is the scoreboard for new words:

Even more! “Good, moo, beer, star, puppy, wow, boo(b), boom, blah, deal and bed.”
Beer…bear….they’re pretty close. And boob, no, I didn’t teach him that one. He just said it on his own one day. Whatever. It’s a word and it still counts!
I’m not sure what it is that happened and I really don’t care. All I know is that Alex’s vocabulary has gone bonkers. All these words in the past two weeks from a kid who couldn’t say a word this time last year.
What’s just as much fun is that he’s developed a sense of humor.
He was watching “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” on DVD one day and there’s one part of the movie where Pooh gets a mouthful of bees mixed in with his honey and he starts spitting them out. Then they get in his ears. This gets a gut-busting laugh from Alex every single time he sees it. It’s not just a chuckle. It’s a full laugh like you’d get out of a toddler who’s being tickled.
Not only is he mentally growing, but he’s physically growing too. We measured him shortly before our trip to Disneyland to see what rides he could get on and he measured in at a shade over 35 inches (just enough to get on the Matterhorn!). When we noticed that some of his pants were suddenly seeming more like capris, we measured him again. 36 1/4 inches. That’s an inch and a quarter in a little over a month!
He also now has a best friend. He’s soft, cuddly, goes everywhere Alex goes and sleeps with him at night and naptime.
His name is Bear.
Yeah, not very imaginative. But Alex can say bear now…so his name is Bear. Bear eats at the table, sleeps with Alex (and gets his own blanket) and gets a seat in the shopping cart alongside Alex. This evening, Alex even tried to give Bear some of his milk before bedtime (kinda messy, but thank goodness Bear is machine washable. I just hope Alex doesn’t get any ideas to go along with him for the ride).
When Alex gets in the car, the first thing he does is puts Bear in the seat next to his car seat. He buckles Bear in and hops in his seat and is ready to go.

It’s so darn cute.

Cute and too thoughtful—–that word list is tremendous!
Wow, amazing words! LOL at “beer” and “boob!” And the relationship with Bear is precious. Love the photo of Bear in the car.
I was skimming a parenting magazine last weekend while waiting on the kids’ haircuts, and caught a Michael G. Thompson article about boys. The older Jack gets, the more I love that guy. Couldn’t quite take him when Jack was little, because, well, I had my preconceived notions and all that about what my son was going to be like.
Anyway, MGT wrote how often parents take away the blankie or favorite snuggle toy from boys, but really, it’s a fantastic thing for a boy to have such a friend. It’s the opposite of what people think. Obviously in your shot, Alex is the big brother who’s taking care of his friend, and I think it said something in the article about how this gives Alex a sense of control, which is a very positive developmental thing. Something or other. I wish I had a memory.
Just…cool to read something one day, and see evidence of it being true the next. And it’s always great to hear good stuff from you guys, too.
That is wonderful! Come on, come off with it, what magical supplement did ya use!!!???? lol
Well mz Mommyhood it looks like You (and whom/whatever) Big Al is influenced by is definitely working!
Congratulations Alex Mom and All.
WTG Alex! That is an impressive list
